A fresh start.
For your Steam device.
Install the tool. Launch the setup. Make it yours.
For Steam Deck and Steam Machine running SteamOS.
Open a terminal.
On Steam Deck, switch to Desktop Mode and open Konsole from the application launcher. On Steam Machine, open a terminal in the SteamOS desktop session.
Use your regular user account. You'll need an internet connection to download Magus and your chosen apps.
Install Magus.
Paste this into your terminal. It downloads the released binary, attempts checksum verification, and installs it into ~/.local/bin.

This installs the tool and stops. It may add its folder to your existing shell profile, but does not apply your app or desktop choices. Check that the output says “checksum verified” before launching.
Launch your setup.
Open a new terminal after installation so it picks up any PATH change, then run this separate command. Follow the guided setup to choose your apps and preferences.
magus runYou can also select and copy the command above.
If the command is not found, use ~/.local/bin/magus run instead.
Your choices are saved in ~/.config/magus/manifest.toml. Magus uses this manifest to apply your setup.
Come back when you need to.
magus doctor reports changes without applying them. Run magus reconcile to restore supported parts of your saved setup. Some changes need manual attention; read the result of each step.
IF SOMETHING GETS IN THE WAY
A few quick checks.
“magus: command not found”
Your shell may not include ~/.local/bin in its PATH. If installation succeeded, launch it directly with ~/.local/bin/magus run. If that file is missing, read the installer output for the failed step.
The installer cannot find a release or download
Check your connection and the GitHub releases. Installation needs a published binary for your architecture and its checksums file. If the assets are unavailable, stop here and check back for a release.
The download fails its checksum check
Do not bypass the check. Retry the installer to download a fresh copy. If it still fails, report the release version and error on the issue tracker.
The wizard needs an interactive terminal
Run magus run directly inside Konsole, after installation finishes. Do not pipe the launch command or run it through a background job.
A step failed or my device was not recognised
Read the reported reason before retrying. Steam Machine detection is still unverified; use the hardware test bench for investigation. General Linux is not supported; Mac is available separately in alpha.
